MTN expanding eSIM support to more Samsung & Apple devices this month

Last year MTN confirmed that it was testing out embedded SIM (eSIM) support, specifically on the Samsung Galaxy Watch at the time. Now the South African network is ready to roll out said support to an even wider range of devices later this month.

15th December to be more precise, with eight new Samsung devices and seven new Apple ones being added to the mix.

The move, for smartwatches and wearables in particular is a big step, particularly as it would deliver cellular services sans a smartphone connection.

“Sim cards have been present in devices since the nineties and we all got so used to them, despite their relative inconvenience. The future is one where these will be embedded in far more devices and MTN is ensuring that our customers are not left behind as this technology advances forward at a rapid rate,” notes MTN SA’s executive for Corporate Affairs, Jacqui O’Sullivan.

MTN adds that this is a big step too as it would allow people to store multiple profiles on a single device, effectively having two or more numbers, and switching between them at ease.

“This is ideal for anyone who may require an additional number for travel or business. You can store multiple contract profiles on a single device, switching between them with ease to manage your lifestyle,” adds O’Sullivan.

“The eSim is not only built into smartphones, but also wearable devices at the point of manufacture. Customers are then able to sync their wearables to other mobile devices, sharing the same number and contract value, whereby they can send and receive messages, notifications and calls on their eSim wearable even when their mobile device isn’t within range,” she explains.

As such, the current functionality empowered by an eSIM on MTN is as follows:

  • “Monitor your health
  • Receive/Reply to messages
  • Makes calls from same number as your phone using your watch
  • Track your workouts
  • Get the motivation you need to achieve your fitness goals.
  • Never miss an important call or notification. Check in with a friend over Walkie-Talkie.
  • Listen to your favourite playlist or podcast.”

Looking at the devices set to be supported, MTN lists:

  • Apple iPhone XS
  • Apple iPhone XS Max
  • Apple iPhone XR
  • Apple iPhone 11
  • Apple iPhone 11 Pro
  • Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • Apple iPhone SE 2
  • Apple iPad 7
  • Apple iPad 8
  • Samsung Galaxy Fold
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 20
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
  • Samsung Galaxy S20
  • Samsung Galaxy S20+
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

The MIA iPhone 12 is also going to be supported, MTN confirms, as well as next year’s Galaxy S30 device, which is seemingly expected in March 2021.

“The world of work and play is changing fast and users increasingly want to connect their digital lives via a single device. MTN is therefore extremely excited to be able to support their customer on the journey to achieving greater access to a raft of new capabilities and opportunities. They also have the added benefit of connecting through SA’s best network,” concludes O’Sullivan.
