Pokémon shows and movies are streaming (legally) on Twitch

It has been announced that Pokémon animation – in both movie and show form – will be streaming on Twitch. Unlike many illegal third party streams that exist on the platform and other places like YouTube, this is an official endeavour by The Pokémon Company.

Pokémon’s official Twitch channel, which has been around for a few years at this point, will be where this content will be homed.

This scheduled officially started just a few hours ago at the time of writing on 8th December and it looks to at least be a semi-permanent setup.

“You’ll be able to tune in throughout the week to catch some of your favorite Pokémon content—including episodes of Pokémon the Series and Pokémon movies. Additionally, some of the best Play! Pokémon tournament moments will be rebroadcasting, allowing you to see some of the world’s top Pokémon players in action,” reads the official announcement.

Said announcement states that, after this week is up, those who want to continue watching can check the Pokémon Twitter account for next week’s schedule.

Those who spend a lot of time on Twiter will find the schedule rather quaint as one person streamers have been making schedules like this for as long as Twitch has been around. To see one of the biggest media franchises in the world follow suit is strange to see, but welcomed.

Aside from the shows and films you will see the Players Cup II on the schedule. This is livestreams of a competitive tournament which is a sequel to the original Players Cup which was announced back in May.

Both Players Cups  act as a way for competitive players in the video and card games to continue playing online. Both of these had, in the past, in-person tournaments which have all been cancelled due to the pandemic. Unfortunately both Players Cup tournaments are limited by region and places like here in South Africa are not included, so local players can only watch others compete.

Pokémon has streamed its animated content for free in the past. Also in May of this year the company released several movies which could be watched on demand, albeit on its own site instead of Twitch. Now in December those movies have been removed from that platform so you’ll have to tune into Twitch to see them and others.
