President Ramaphosa confirms increased restrictions for COVID-19 hotspots

This evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation following the number of new COVID-19 cases in South Africa peaking to its highest level since mid-August.

Ramaphosa noted concerns regarding another wave of infections for the country, as cases have steadily been increasing in recent weeks.

More specifically he highlighted three COVID-19 hotspots that are showing a resurgent increase in cases – the Nelson Mandela Bay, the Garden Route and Sarah Baartman.

It is the Nelson Mandela Bay region in particular that will now see alert level 2-esque restrictions being put in place from midnight tonight (3rd December).

This means a curfew from 22:00 until 4:00, as well as banning the sale of alcohol from 18:00 on Thursday to 8:00 on Monday. Added to this is the requirement to adhere to rules regarding large gatherings.

Along with Nelson Mandela Bay, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize will be assessing the situations in the Garden Route and Sarah Baartman in the coming days, according to the president, whereafter he will make a call on whether similar restrictions will need to be implemented.

As for the rest of the country, it will still remain in level 1 lockdown, but should more hotspots crop up in the days leading up to the holidays, a hard lockdown is increasingly likely.

“This virus does not relax. This virus does not take a holiday,” Ramaphosa stated, calling for South Africans to take responsibility for their health and the health of others.

As such, he once again urges people in the country to adhere to regulations and remain vigilant in stopping the spread of COVID-19.
