Qualcomm & Google extending Android support on Snapdragon phones

If you own an Android mobile device, it is more than likely powered by silicon from Qualcomm‘s foundry and in particular Snapdragon.

It is why the recent announcement of a collaboration between Qualcomm and Google makes a lot of sense, with it designed to offer access to a minimum of four Android OS versions and four years’ worth of security updates on a wider range of Snapdragon platforms.

This collaboration has also been brought about as an extension to Google’s Project Treble. For those unfamiliar with the Project, it works much like the Intel EVO platform, which aims to set a specific range of features that OEMs adhere to to ensure consumers can expect certain levels of quality on devices.

That said, Project Treble is still at the discretion of OEMs to implement, so there is no guarantee that you’ll indeed get a minimum of four years of security updates, hence why Qualcomm has announced this collaboration.

“As part of this collaboration with Google, Qualcomm Technologies will now support four Android OS versions and four years of security updates for all Snapdragon platforms utilizing the Project Treble enhancements, starting with the new Snapdragon 888 Mobile Platform,” explained Qualcomm’s press release on the matter.

“These initiatives are designed to enable faster Android OS upgrades with fewer resources and a predictable software lifecycle for Snapdragon based devices, which together are expected to result in more consumers with Snapdragon based devices running the latest Android OS version,” it adds.

There has been no timeline placed on when lesser-powered Snapdragon silicon will also work in conjunction with Project Treble, but hopefully it’s soon, as owners of entry-level and mid-range devices stand to benefit the most from the collaboration.

“Through this collaboration, we expect accelerated Android OS upgrade on Snapdragon based devices while providing a superior user experience for end users,” added Kedar Kondap, VP of product management at Qualcomm.
