Raru reveals South Africa’s best selling games for 2020

Local online retailer Raru has revealed some interesting insight into what games South Africans chose to buy in 2020.

Below are the top 20 selling games of the year and top of the pile sits the PlayStation 4-exclusive The Last of Us: Part II (see our review here).

As you read through the list you’ll see that PlayStation games pop up many times with exclusives on the platform appearing eight times out of 20.

1 The Last of Us: Part II (PS4)
2 Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4/Xbox One/PC)
3 Super Mario 3D All Stars (Nintendo Switch)
4 DOOM Eternal (PS4/Xbox One)
5 Ghost of Tsushima (PS4)
6 Persona 5 Royal (PS4)
7 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (PS5/PS4/Xbox One/Xbox Series X)
8 Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5/PS4)
9 Resident Evil 3 (PS4/Xbox One)
10 Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (Nintendo Switch)
11 Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch)
12 Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 (PS4/Xbox One)
13 Nioh 2 (PS4)
14 Demon’s Souls (PS5)
15 Paper Mario: The Origami King (Nintendo Switch)
16 Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Nintendo Switch)
17 Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4)
18 Yakuza Remastered Collection (PS4)
19 Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle (PS4/Xbox One)
20 Yakuza: Like a Dragon – Day Ichi Edition (PS4/Xbox One)

For anyone who’s been in the country’s gaming scene for any number of years this is probably not too much of a surprise. South African loves the PlayStation and it’s why the next-gen PlayStation 5 is all but sold out right now while Xbox Series X|S stock is rather easy to find.

In second place is the juggernaut – and multiplatform game – Cyberpunk 2077. Just today we learned of its 8 million pre-order sales and $50 million revenue on Steam. Seeing it sell so well locally is, again, not too surprising.

What is surprising to us is Super Mario 3D All Stars, a Nintendo Switch exclusive, in third place. In the last few months the Nintendo Switch has become exorbitantly expensive due to the weak Rand, pricing the console out of reach for many.

Seeing a Switch game place so high, and other Switch-only titles populating the list, is testament to the Nintendo brand loyalty in the face of high local prices. The fact that Super Mario 3D All Stars offered extra value by bundling three games in one probably helped sales too, on top of the nostalgia factor.

While looking at these sales it’s important to remember that they only pertain to physical game sales from Raru. We’re certain that the list would change if we factored in physical sales from other retailers as well as the all important digital sales. Unfortunately those details have not been made available to us, unlike the data from Raru.

This list, however, is still an interesting look at the general tastes of the nation.

In conjunction with the release of this top seller list Raru is also running a contest to win free games and merchandise by voting on its game of the year poll.
