Uber offers up 10 million free rides for those getting the COVID-19 vaccine state-side

As the COVID-19 vaccine begins being dispensed in various countries, Uber wants to encourage folks to take the vaccine by offering up free rides.

An announcement on Thursday from Uber promises to provide 10 million free or discounted rides to insure that “transportation is not a barrier to getting the vaccine”.

“We’re beginning this effort in partnership with the National Urban League, the Morehouse School of Medicine and the National Action Network, organizations with deep ties to the communities of color that have been disproportionately hurt by the pandemic—with more partnerships to come soon,” Uber chief executive officer, Dara Khosrowshahi, said in a statement.

The question we have is whether this generosity will reach other parts of the world.

Earlier this year Uber provided 10 million rides and food deliveries to healthcare workers, and seniors around the world. Of that figure, in the Middle East and Africa region Uber partnered with Mastercard to provide 120 000 free trips and meals.

This latest initiative however seems to be restricted to the US, at least for now.

We’ve asked the local arm of Uber whether a similar offer would come to South Africa and we will update this story when we receive a response.

While we await the vaccine, we urge you to be safe when using an Uber this festive season. We took the liberty of reiterating some of the more important safety guidelines currently in effect on the platform here.
