Updating Windows recommended for Cyberpunk 2077 launch crashes

A lot is wrong with Cyberpunk 2077 right now, from glitches to crashes to missing features promised before launch. CD Projekt Red has issued an update for at least one of these issues recently when it comes to launch crashes and issues on Windows.

The company points to older Windows versions being the culprit and provides the following short how to’s for dealing with it:

Windows 10:

  1. Check the version of your operating system, you can do it by pressing Win+R and typing in “winver”.
  2. Crashes might occur on Windows 10 versions below 1909, please update your OS to the most recent version. Instructions on how to do it can be found here.
  3. Additional troubleshooting is available here.

Windows 7:

  1. Check the version of your operating system, you can do it by pressing Win+R and typing in “winver”.
  2. Make sure you use the latest Windows 7 build: 7601.
  3. Make sure you use the latest graphics drivers available for Windows 7: NVIDIA | AMD.

On top of this additional notes are provided for each OS.

For Windows 10 specific older builds of the OS may cause compatibility issues with DirectX 12 which Cyberpunk 2077 uses. The two specific builds mentioned by CD Projekt Red are version 1607 (Build 14393) and version 1703 (Build 15063).

For those still on Windows 7 it’s noted that official support from Microsoft for this OS ended earlier this year. While Cyberpunk 2077 and DirectX 12 will work on Windows 7 (with some missing features) problems may still be experienced.

While we understand that a lot of people still love Windows 7, we’re not sure why anyone would be using Windows 10 and still using such old builds mentioned by CD Projekt Red. We can only think of some offline PCs used for remote work that someone now wants to play Cyberpunk 2077 on thanks to the fact that it’s a standalone .exe with no DRM.

While the above is appreciated, and as we alluded to at the top, launch issues are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this game. We discuss some of these problems here.
