Warner Bros. movies will release on HBO Max too, for 31 days

Today may be a landmark day for movies as a whole as Warner Bros. have announced that its entire 2021 slate of movies will launch on streaming service HBO Max and in physical theatres at the same time.

We already knew that this would be the case for Wonder Woman 1984 when it launches on 25th December 2020, but the rest of the big name movies like Dune and The Suicide Squad were left in limbo until now.

Unlike the poorly received setup for the live action Mulan remake, these big blockbuster releases will not require any additional purchases. Those subscribed to HBO Max get in automatically.

There are, of course, some caveats to this arrangement.

Right now HBO Max is limited to only the USA and Canada, and these new movie releases will be limited to the former. Canada – and the rest of the world – will not be able to legally watch these movies and will either need to wait for other types of home releases or brave going to an actual cinema if any are open and showing these movies.

Secondly the HBO Max releases of these movies will be a timed event. While the streaming service will have access from day one, the movies will become unavailable after 31 days.

According to the dedicated site for this Same Day Premiere programme, the following Warner Bros. movies are on the way to HBO Max next year:

  • Dune
  • Godzilla Vs. Kong
  • In the Heights
  • Judas and the Black Messiah
  • King Richard
  • Malignant
  • Space Jam: A New Legacy
  • The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
  • The Many Saints of Newark
  • The Suicide Squad
  • Those Who Wish Me Dead
  • Tom & Jerry
  • Wonder Woman 1984

Strangely there’s only 13 in that list but WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar has announced 17 movies included in this endeavour.

Excluded from the list but mentioned by Kilar are The Matrix 4, Mortal Kombat, Reminiscence and Cry Macho.

“As I mentioned in my post from a few weeks ago [about Wonder Woman 2918], we see an opportunity to do something firmly focused on the fans, which is to provide choice. Whether that choice is to enjoy a great new movie out at the cinema, to open up HBO Max, or to do both. For more visibility and context into our thought process, please do read the post here,” Kilar writes.

While no release dates are provided for the Warner Bros. slate of movies in 2021 Kilar does state that there will be a new movie out once every three weeks.
