You can now get HD FaceTime calls on older iPhone models

Video call and videoconferencing has become all the more important in 2020, and perhaps even more so with the holidays around the corner and people restricted as far as interacting with friends and family. It is why the latest update from Apple will be welcome news for those with an older iPhone.

This as FullHD (1080p) quality FaceTime calls are now available on the iPhone 8 to iPhone 11, where it was not available previously. It should be noted though, that this video quality is only accessible when you’re connected to WiFi.

According to reports, the feature was surreptitiously activated during the rollout of iOS 14.2, so if an update is pending in tour Settings, you may want to download and install it.

For those wondering about whether the feature will be available on Apple’s latest iPhone 12 range, the answer is yes. This despite the fact that we’re no closer to knowing when the devices will be ready to purchase in South Africa, or indeed for how much.

Along with supporting HD calls over WiFi, the iPhone 12 series can also do so over 5G.

Hopefully the devices land locally in time to make use of the video calling application prior to Christmas Day or New Year’s, when no doubt plenty of calls will be happening.

In the interim, however, those with an iPhone 8 or better, should be able to access the new addition in the coming days thanks to the update.
