LG Smart TVs to get Google Stadia support later this year

Google Stadia is coming to LG Smart TVs later this year. This is one of the latest announcements that the South Korean firm has made this week for CES 2021. Whether this is a good or bad thing remains to be seen, especially as Stadia has done little to win over players since its limited launch last year.

That said, the prospect of being able to play some of the latest AAA gaming titles without the use of any additional hardware is an intriguing one.

This new functionality, which is expected to be available some time in the latter of this year, is thanks to an update that the native webOS operating system on LG Smart TVs will receive. This is the same update that will allow Stadia to work of Google TV devices, with LG being the first manufacturer to announce the functionality is heading its way too.

“Stadia on LG TVs will allow customers to instantly play hit Stadia games such as Cyberpunk 2077, NBA 2K21, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion with just a Stadia controller and no additional hardware or game downloads required,” explains a press release regarding the announcement sent to Hypertext.

Given the graphic and performance intensity of the aforementioned AAA titles, it will be interesting to see just how solid a gaming experience Google Stadia will provide on a Smart TV sans any additional hardware.

“LG plans to have the new service launched within the second half of 2021 on LG Smart TVs as a downloadable app from the LG Content Store in countries where Stadia is available. Stadia already offers more than 130 games with more being added regularly. Games can be purchased individually or gamers can claim a regular cadence of games to be played for free with a subscription to Stadia Pro, which includes exclusive discounts and up to 4K resolution,” adds the press release.

Hopefully by that time, Stadia will have been launched in South Africa, as its local availability still remains a mystery. In fact, outside of the US, UK and central Europe, Stadia is not something that players can yet experience.

Either way, if Stadia does land here and you wish to try on an LG Smart TV sans hardware, you’re probably going to need internet connectivity in excess of 60Mbps to ensure a solid experience.
