Intel reveals four new CPU families at CES 2021

While it might not be under the Las Vegas sun this year, the CES 2021 event is currently underway online.

On Monday Intel showcased four new processor families it will be bringing to market. The focus here appears to be CPUs for the mobile market although there are desktop processors coming in the first quarter of this year.

Let’s take a closer look at the CPUs.

First up we have the 11th Gen Intel vPro platform for business notebooks. We know that the features that came down with 11th Gen processors such as Intel Iris Xe graphics and support for WiFi 6 are all present.

What we find interesting however is the inclusion of Intel Hardware Shield.

According to Intel this security feature is silicon-enabled artificial intelligence threat detection. The security feature claims to be able to stop ransomware and crypto-mining attacks which would prove mighty attractive for business owners.

Back in 2017, a vulnerabilities known as Meltdown and Spectre were discovered in Intel CPUs and hopefully these security focussed improvements in the 11th Gen Intel vPro platform help mitigate other threats.

Next up, for education Intel has announced the N-series Intel Pentium Silver and Celeron processors. These CPUs are designed with performance in mind but this is performance tailored to education needs.

The idea is to provide a smooth user experience and according to Intel these new CPUs will deliver a 35 percent increase in application performance and 78 percent better graphics performance compared to previous Intel generations.

We are interested to see whether these CPUs will be more affordable and which manufacturers implement them in their solutions.

The third family of processors is the 11th Gen Intel Core H-series mobile processors for gaming. The top of the pops here is the Intel Core i7 Special Edition which will reportedly hit 5GHz and is designed specifically for mobile gaming.

The CPUs in the H-Series will feature PCIe Gen 4 support which is good news and there are more than 40 notebooks coming from manufacturers in the first half of this year. When exactly we can expect those notebooks isn’t clear at time of writing.

Finally, the big question on the lips of enthusiasts has been when we can expect a new family of desktop processors from Intel and that was answered at CES 2021.

The Intel 11th Gen Core S-Series of desktop CPUs is set to arrive soon headlined by the Intel Core i9-11900K. These CPUs will boast an 19 percent IPC improvement compared to previous generations. This is notable as AMD claimed the same improvement when it revealed its Zen 3 processors in late 2020.

But wait, there is one more noteworthy announcement. Alder Lake is a new x86 CPU due in the second half of 2021. This appears to be Intel taking a shot at Apple’s M1 CPUs introduced last year. These CPUs will be built on a 10nm process and if Intel is able to squeeze similar performance out of an x86 chip, Apple may have competition on its hands.

We’re expecting to hear from AMD later today regarding its releases for 2021 when chief executive officer at the firm, Lisa Su, presents a keynote at CES 2021.
