LG offers another look at its rollable screen-touting smartphone for CES 2021

CES 2021 kicks off this week, and already we’ve seen a number of manufacturers debut their latest devices, as well as their consumer electronics plans for the year. Being an international event, it would not be CES without some concept devices, and LG has offered up a better look at its Explorer Project device.

Taking inspiration from its rollable OLED TV, LG is going to embrace that technology for its future-focused smartphones, showcasing what a device capable of  extending to different screen sizes could be like.

It is a very similar approach to the one that Chinese firm Oppo showcased at its Inno Day last year, and much like that device, the Explorer Project still remains a concept for now.

As such, the South Korean’s flagship device in the mobile space is still the LG Wing and its swivelling second screen. While may like the design of the Wing, a smartphone with a rollable screen to increase in size to that of a small tablet is certainly more intriguing.

Hopefully then, the Explorer Project is not simply a device designed to wow at CES alone, and LG has plans to make one for the real world.

For now, there is no official word on whether the Explorer Project will ever see the light of day as a fully fledged device.

While we wait for more on that front, you can see a preview of the rollable screen-touting smartphone in action in the video embedded below. It is timestamped to start towards the end of the presentation, but you can see all of LG’s other new 2021 home appliances and TVs it has to offer.

There is also a Future-focused briefing scheduled for tomorrow, so there may be more details shared on the Explorer Project, as well as some of the company’s innovative projects.
