Parler booted off of AWS due to posts that encourage and incite violence

We are hitting the ground running as we begin a new calendar year, though the same can’t be said for social media site Parler as it’s forced to shop around for a new web hosting service.

At the weekend, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that due to violations of its rules, Parler would be removed from its web hosting service.

The rules that were violated, according to CNN, regard the encouragement and incitement of violence on Parler, of which Amazon found 98 examples of posts on the service that fit the bill.

“We’ve seen a steady increase in this violent content on your website, all of which violates our terms,” AWS wrote in a letter seen by CNN. “It’s clear that Parler does not have an effective process to comply with the AWS terms of service.”

AWS went on to write that while it respects Parler’s right to determine what content it allows on its website, AWS cannot provide services to the social network as it is unable to identify and remove content that encourages violence against others.

Google and Apple also removed the Parler app from respective app stores for similar reasons to AWS.

Chief executive officer at Parler, John Matze said that due to the AWS decision, Parler could be offline for “up to a week” as it rebuilds.

“We will try our best to move to a new provider right now as we have many competing for our business, however Amazon, Google and Apple purposefully did this as a coordinated effort knowing our options would be limited,” Matze wrote in a post on Parler.

On a somewhat related note, the resistance to Parler follows the suspension of President Donald Trump’s Twitter account.

Trump’s personal Twitter account was flagged for inciting violence following the criminal acts at the US Capitol last week. Trump was issued a warning and told that further encouragement or incitement of violence would result in a permanent ban.

At the weekend Trump sent out two tweets which would be his last. You can find a full explanation for why Trump was suspended here.

It seems as if 2021 is going to be as interesting as 2020.
