Sony’s Bravia Core streaming service promises 4K Blu-ray-esque video quality

Every company is making a play at streaming, including Sony. No, we’re talking at another crack at something for the PlayStation ecosystem, but rather its Bravia TVs, with the service called Bravia Core.

For now, this streaming service is limited to Sony’s Bravia XR models. If you’re wondering if said models are available in South Africa, they are not currently, with only four models available locally since the announcement that the brand would be returning to our shores late last year.

Back to the Core streaming service, and Sony is making some rather bold and interesting claims, particularly as it pertains to the quality of video it will support.

To that end the service will feature Pure Stream technology on specific Sony Pictures titles, like Into the Spider-Verse (in the header image). This technology, Sony claims, can deliver a “near lossless” viewing experience, as well as Blu-ray level UHD visuals. Added to this is the ability to leverage up to 80 Mbps internet connections for enhanced video quality, which is nearly four times the speed the line speeds that most streaming services require for their highest tier of resolution.

Bravia Core will feature natively on the following model of XR TVs – MASTER Series Z9J 8K LED, MASTER Series A90J and A80J OLED, and X95J and X90J 4K LED. As such, should Sony choose to bring any into the country, the addition of Core streaming could prove a unique selling point.

It still remains to be seen what Sony’s larger play is with Core, but at the moment it appears to be a platform dedicated on showcasing the capabilities of your newly purchased Bravia XR TV. As such, it may not be a service designed to rival that of Netlfix, Amazon Prime or Disney+, for now at least.

We’ve reached out to Sony’s local representation regarding the availability of XR TVs in SA, as well as the likelihood of Core featuring on said models.
