The internet has beaten the first Pokémon gym inside of a Twitter avatar

On 8th January Twitter account Constantin Liétard (@screenshakes) started something rather special: giving the entire site the ability to play Pokémon Red inside of an avatar. Now the hive mind has completed the first hurdle in the game by beating Brock.

As you may have guessed this is much like the famous Twitch Plays Pokémon in which viewers could comment commands to actively control the player inside of the game.

What makes @screenshakes’ efforts different, aside from the fact that it’s on Twitter, is that there’s no livestream of the game for players to use. Instead, every 15 seconds, the avatar / profile picture of the @screenshakes will change to an up to date screenshot of the game.

With these rules in place players have just recently managed to beat the first gym of the game, besting the rock type specialist Brock.

Reading conversations about the game on a dedicated Discord server and it seems that the first gym was a breeze, well as easy as something like this can be. This is mostly due to the fact that the players chose Squirtle as the starter for the playthrough. The water type is super effective against Brock’s rock team.

The Squirtle, nicknamed “AMAYBE”, has now evolved into a Wartortle and is at level 18 at the time of writing. We know this as the software behind this endeavour has been updated since it went live.

Aside from the twitter avatar changing to a screenshot of the game, the profile’s banner image will now also be updated to reflect the status of the team. You can see the latest version of this in the screenshot below. Twitter has already caught three other Pokémon to accompany Wartortle.

Right now players are right outside of Pewter City, the home of Brock and his gym. Unfortunately this area, Route 3, isn’t the easiest to navigate for so many people inputting commands at once. After Route 3 players will need to navigate through Mt. Moon before reaching Cerulean City and the second gym run by Misty. This gym will be much more difficult to overcome as players currently don’t have any strong super effective attackers to tackle it like they had for Brock.

Right now the current amount of replies to the original tweet (above) sits at 40.2k.
