Friends: The Reunion in South Africa – on DStv first, then Showmax

We recently learned that HBO Max still has no plans to come to South Africa despite a new ad-supported version of the streaming service is coming on 1st June, which meant that local fans of Friends would not be able to watch the reunion special. Thankfully we’re not being left out as the event will be available locally and, maybe more importantly, legally.

Friends: The Reunion will be available first on M-Net, 30th May at 20:00 local time. Following this streaming service Showmax will then have access to it from 31st May.

Unfortunately this is not the same day and date as the overseas launch, which is happening on 27th May.

So what is on offer here? As you can see in the trailer below the entire main cast will return. It won’t just be some celebrities sitting in a Zoom call but will instead have the Friends in a recreation of the set, playing trivia games, reading over old scripts and more.

While they will be reading from show scripts for a shot of nostalgia the event is promised to be unscripted with a cadre of other notable guests and cameos. There seems to be varied mix here between people who actually appeared in the show and then just random celebrities. If we had to guess said celebrities will probably be popping in as mutual fans of the show.

“Friends: The Reunion will feature a variety of special guest appearances, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai,” reads a press release sent to us.

We recently saw a few behind closed doors snippets of the event in the WarnerMedia Upfront showcase. It’s shaping up to be a real treat for even casual fans of the show. Speaking of Zoom, during the showcase Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer showed up digitally to introduce the trailer which was then unavailable to the public.
