Horizon Forbidden West looks like more of the same

Sony and Guerrilla have released a PlayStation State of Play event showing off a decent chunk of gameplay for Horizon Forbidden West, the direct sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn.

Before we get into the reveal, which you can watch in the embed below, we have to say that it didn’t exactly blow us away. It’s not that the game doesn’t look amazing and fun to play, much like Horizon Zero Dawn, but it doesn’t seem transformative.

It appears that Guerrilla has very much taken the approach of “more is more” and, for this sequel, simply pilled content on top of the first game.

There is nothing wrong with this, of course, but those who were expecting a completely new experience here we can see being left disappointed.

In this theme we can see that a big focus of this reveal, and the developer recap at the end, is to highlight the various new systems, mechanics, enemies and environments available.

Aloy has a bunch of new tricks in her bag: the Diving Mask for underwater expeditions, the Pullcaster for grapple hooking around, the Shieldwing for hang gliding Breath of the Wild style. You’ve seen all of these in other games before, and they look nicely implemented here.

Outside of Aloy the world of Horizon Forbidden West looks much more tropical and filled with new machines to fight and ride. The two machines that get a lot of screen time here are the Clawstriders and Tremortusks, based on raptors and mammoths respectively.

The enemy humans can also override the machines and ride them much like Aloy can, adding more wrinkles to the conflicts. It also looks like Aloy versus human combat has been much improved, which we’re glad to see as it was rather bland compared to Aloy versus machines before.

There’s more minutia here such as the ability to scan climbable surfaces and adhesive grenades, but above are the big new additions.

Horizon Forbidden West still has no release date, but will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive when it does eventually launch. That being said more and more PlayStation exclusives have come to PC in recent years. Horizon Zero Dawn arrived on PC last year. This has been joined by Days Gone and there’s strong indications that Uncharted 4 is also coming to PC.

We doubt Horizon Forbidden West will come to PC anywhere near launch, but it’s just worth keeping these PC releases in mind when you look at future PlayStation “exclusives”.
