PlayStation to be left out of Borderlands 3 crossplay

Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox, has dropped something of a bomb on Twitter about Borderlands 3 and its future with crossplay.

“Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles,” Pitchford writes.

For some this news will not be a surprise. In the Epic v Apple lawsuit it was revealed that Sony charges certain companies to enable crossplay on the PlayStation platform.

While Pitchford makes no mention of this in his short announcement it’s not difficult to make this assumption, especially as the Sony crossplay revelation happened so recently at the beginning of this month.

The publisher of Borderlands 3 is 2K which is apparently mandating the removal of crossplay on PlayStation. Our best guess here is that Sony wants to charge 2K and 2K doesn’t want to pay.

Again we have to point out here that this is just us trying to connect some dots here. Maybe it has nothing to do with money and there’s some mix of security concerns or user confidentiality that is somehow only rearing its head when PlayStations are involved.

But there’s just nothing to support that right now and we feel like Superintendent Chalmers in the famous steamed hams skit.

“No crossplay? At this time of year? At this time of day? On this console? Localised entirely within the PlayStation?”

We’re sure more of the conversation will come to light when Borderlands 3 gets closer to releasing crossplay elsewhere, or when Pitchford decides to tweet again.

At this point we also have to point out that Borderlands 3 was, for a year, exclusive to the Epic Games Store. It was also revealed in the lawsuit that this exclusivity raked in a cool $115 Million.
