Stage 2 loadshedding set for 16:00 with high likelihood for the rest of the week

With level 2 lockdown set to kick in from 23:00 this evening, Eskom has added insult to injury by announcing the implementation of stage 2 loadshedding from 16:00 this afternoon until 05:00 tomorrow morning.

This as the power utility has been unable to keep up with demand brought on by the cold front that has hit the country this week, it confirmed in a power alert posted on Twitter a few minutes ago. The breakdown of generating units has further exacerbated the issue, Eskom adds, as breakdown total 14 560MW of capacity.

The capacity will be constrained even further with an additional  2 300MW out of commission due to planned maintenance. Some generating units are expected to return this evening, but these are still deemed to be insufficient in returning the grid to normal.

Eskom has appealed to everyone to limit their electricity usage in the coming days, but seeing as how the drop in temperature will necessitate power hungry heating solutions, the chances of that are slim. As such, we can expect to see more bouts of loadshedding throughout the course of this week.

As always, we suggest downloading the EskomSePush app on iOS or Android in order to stay up to date with loadshedding schedules in your area.
