The new largest LEGO set is an 11K piece world map

Oh boy LEGO has done it again. The famous Danish toy company has announced another set that will become the largest ever in the form of 31203: World Map, a behemoth with 11 695 pieces.

As far as names go this one is pretty self-explanatory, but what does require some explanation is the theme that this set belongs to, which is simply called “Art”.

The Art theme is unique because it has builders recreate famous pieces almost pixel by pixel. It does this by having you build a canvas and then manually fill it in using small 1X1 tiles akin to pixels.

Art sets have been made for Iron Man, Star Wars, Micky / Minnie Mouse, The Beatles, Harry Potter and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe. The full range can be viewed here for those interested.

Because this is a set in the Art theme the price here isn’t as bad as you may expect: €249.99 / $249.99 / £229.99 / AU$399.99 / CA$349.99 depending on where you live. Yes that’s a lot of money, but it’s cheaper than the previous largest set, the Colosseum. So what gives?

While the World Map is the biggest in terms of number of pieces, it isn’t the biggest in terms of size. Once assembled the map measures in at 104 X 65 centimetres (length X height) with many other sets larger than it in any given dimension.

LEGO prices its sets in terms of how much plastic is in the box (along with various other parameters). Because most of the Art line is the relatively tiny 1X1 pieces, the price is lower here for the number of pieces.

Okay, all those numbers and context aside, how is this set? Some overseas publications such as the fantastic Brickset already have reviews out, but we’re just not excited about this one.

At launch we built the aforementioned Iron Man Art set and it was not fun at all. The meticulous placing of those small pieces is a pain. You can’t even zone out and focus on a podcast or music because the build requires a decent amount of attention.

Unlike other sets where you can go by piece differences in size and shape, you have to be laser focused on colour here and place the pieces precisely.

While we will acquiesce that the Art theme makes for fantastic display pieces, the building process feels more like soul crushing factory work.

The last bit to mention here is the colours. There are several ways to build this set so that the colours around the land masses are unique, and there’s also an all-black option for those who prefer the stealthy look. You can see some of these in the gallery below.
