Certain ads can no longer appear in the YouTube masthead

The YouTube masthead is the first thing you see when you log into the video sharing platform (depending on whether you have a Premium subscription or not) and now certain ads can’t appear on that space.

As of Monday, YouTube has banned certain types of ads from appearing on its masthead. These ad types include:

• Gambling – Assets that depict or reference gambling-related content, including offline gambling, online gambling, online non-casino games, and social casino games.
• Elections and political content – Assets related to elections or politics
• Alcohol – Assets that depict or reference alcohol-related content, including ads promoting the sale of alcohol as well as branding or informational ads focusing on alcoholic beverages
• Prescription drug terms – Assets that depict or reference prescription drug terms

Speaking to Axios, a Google spokesperson said that this update to YouTube’s policy would drive a “better experience for users”. Not that we feel one ad spot will improve the experience of using YouTube. That having been said, making the YouTube masthead a little less open to abuse which is good.

We should point out that the above ad types aren’t the only ones as YouTube’s advertising policy still governs which ads can be placed and which can’t.
