Comic Con Africa will be an in-person event again in 2022

With South Africa in the middle of a third COVID-19 wave and the country’s vaccine rollout woefully slow, the organisers of Comic Con Africa have announced that the in-person convention will return not this year, but next in 2022.

Comic Con 2022 will take place between 22nd and 25th September, meaning that it is more than a year away. We’re sure everyone is hoping that the country can be nearly fully vaccinated in the next 15 months, but with the South African government you never know.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, the safety of our fans, exhibitors and partners comes first. Returning in September 2022, also makes it possible for Comic Con Africa to come back in the expected full force – with bigger numbers, more activations and international talent,” writes Carla Massmann, the Show Director.

To facilitate such a return a bigger venue has also been chosen for 2022. The Johannesburg Expo Centre will host an estimated more than 80 00 visitors going off of the press release we received.

The last time Comic Con Africa happened in person it was in 2019 at the Gallagher Convention Centre. In 2018 the event was in Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and International Convention Centre.

This space will play home to returning elements of past conventions such as the Wakanda Watering Hole beer garden and the Food Truck Village.

“We have many new editions like StreetCon, TechCon and many more areas that Comic Con Africa are excited to be introducing in 2022, and the Johannesburg Expo Centre allows for us to safely introduce these new and exciting editions. The Expo Centre is easy to access via all highways and is a mere 20min from central points like Fourways, opening the show up to so many more visitors. It also offers ample parking and easy access points, making arrival at the show more efficient and streamlined,” Massman adds.

While 15 months is a long time to wait we’re excited to hear about the planned return of this. We’re sure that many other people miss local events like this

For those who miss the local convention scene make sure you check out our cosplay galleries from 2019 and 2018, the two years that Comic Con Africa was able to operate as intended.
