Entries for this year’s MTN Business App of the Year awards are open

This marks the 10th anniversary of the MTN Business App of the Year awards and this year MTN Business is extending its App Academy with a view to reaching more aspiring developers.

Last year, MTN launched the MTN Business App Academy to mentor and upskill aspiring talent for a career in app development in South Africa. This year the App Academy is open to the youth across the African continent.

The App Academy takes the form a six-week coding programme that happens online. The apps created during this programme could also go on to win an award.

The top three apps created within the Academy will receive assistance to build out the idea and MTN Business will assist with identifying customers who could benefit from the app’s creation.

There is also the new addition of the Campus Cup Challenge which hopes to engage students at universitites, FET colleges and other tertiary education institutions.

“The MTN Business App of the Year Awards eco-system continues to evolve and expand. It is now a Pan African initiative focused on producing the highest caliber of cutting edge and market-ready solutions. At the same time, we are building and deepening a future pipeline of digital brilliance to ensure Africa, its people, communities and the economy can harness the full benefits of the digital economy and the fourth industrial revolution,” says head of marketing at MTN Business, Kholo Magagane.

As for prizes, the MTN Business App of the Year will receive a trip to a tech-related destination worth R200 000. The top three Campus Cup app entrants will each receive a share of R100 000 – R50 000 for the winner, R30 000 for second place and R20 000 for third.
