Here’s the bizarre Rick and Morty anti-vaping ad

Well here’s something off-brand for Rick and Morty: the official Twitter account for the popular animated show has released a video warning against the dangers of vaping.

As vaping has grown in popularity, particularly among young people, these kinds of PSAs are becoming more common and there’s really nothing wrong with that. Kids who have been swayed and pressured into vaping and smoking tobacco through, should know all the facts and be treated with respect in that regard.

But… is Rick and Morty really the best vehicle for that? We love the show but it doesn’t seem like the best vehicle for this kind of thing. A defining characteristic of titular character Rick is that he’s a serious alcoholic. And not the cool drinking, like sexy drinking, but psycho trailer park drinking.

We’re not here to weigh one substance against another or ride any kind of high road, the whole situation is just strange.

The animation for the ad is, at least, really well done if a little out there. So the message here is that if you vape a mad scientist will extract the metals from your blood and turn it into a giant mech? What?

Aside from declaring that this is an advert with “#ad”, the tweet also links to the Twitter account for “The Real Cost“, a programme run by the US government. On the About Us page for The Real Cost it’s stated that the endeavour is part of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its Center for Tobacco Products. The website also mentions the US Department of Health and Human Services in the footer.

This is far from the first time that Rick and Morty has made exclusive content for adverts. It’s had so many adverts, in fact, that there’s an upload to YouTube showing off a compilation of various products the show has peddled in the past.

While some people have always had a dislike for this kind of thing at least the previous adverts aren’t sanctimonious.
