Major update brings crossplay and more to Borderlands 3

Originally released in September 2019, Borderlands 3 now has crossplay across most platforms. Google Stadia, Mac, PC (Epic Games Store and Steam), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S can all now intermingle.

This is thanks to the aptly-named Crossplay Update outlined here. For those experiencing déjà vu it’s because, when Borderlands 3 launched on Steam after being exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC, it also came with crossplay. This wasn’t true crossplay as it simply meant that owners of the game on the two different stores on PC could play with each other.

“Crossplay between the aforementioned platforms is made possible by SHiFT Matchmaking, and you’ll be greeted by an opt-in window when the Crossplay Update is live. Regardless of whether you choose to enable or disable Crossplay, you’ll be prompted to set a Crossplay Display Name, which is required for SHiFT Matchmaking functionality,” the announcement reads.

That display name must meet certain criteria and can be changed if you’re not happy with it initially.

While crossplay is the star player here and its name is shared by the update, there’s a lot more going on.

As you can see in the trailer above there’s a returning seasonal event called “The Revengence of Revenge of the Cartels”. We’re not sure if that name is a nod to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance as the made up word in both the titles is spelt differently, though maybe that’s just for copyright reasons.

This event works the same way it did when it was originally introduced in 2020 with the requirement of killing many Cartel thugs before fighting the main boss to unlock a slew of cosmetics.

That’s not where news of seasonal events ends as the Crossplay Update also makes them permanent. Limited time seasonal events released in the past can now be accessed indefinitely through a new option in the main menu.

The True Trials events now have a finale and, to facilitate all the new content players have access to, the level cap has been raised to 72 from 65.

Strangely we just chose this week to replay Borderlands 3. We’re still having fun with the bog standard main story despite the awful plot and acting of some irritating characters. The performance is better compared to our launch review but it’s still shaky at times.

We also only have access to the base version of the game and we’re not sure we’re going to splurge on the mountain of DLC the game now has. It is and will always be insane that this game has two season passes.
