Phantom Abyss released into Early Access for ‘at least a year’

The latest game from publisher Devolver Digital and new developer Team WIBY – Phantom Abyss – is now out on Steam Early Access after a surprise push forward.

The game is a mix of Indiana Jones, Temple Run and racing ghosts. Phantom Abyss has a unique hook where players can tackle randomly made temples trying to get to the treasure at the end with failed (and no dead) players showing up as ghosts to act as a kind of competitive, guiding spirit for new players attempting the challenge.

Once a temple has been conquered it is sealed forever with the winner given the lustrous title as the only person on Earth to claim that feat.

On Steam the game is 20 percent off as a launch discount which will end on 8th July. Locally the price, with the discount, is R180, down from the regular price of R225.

Team WIBY adds that there’s no price increase planned for the game as it gets closer to release – a common practice for Early Access titles – but this isn’t off the cards either.

“There is no final decision on price increase but the price may increase during Early Access as more content and features are added,” the developer writes.

As for when that 1.0 version is pencilled in for release, Phantom Abyss is planned to be in Early Access for at least one year as more is added to it based on community feedback.

Early feedback on it, in the form of Steam reviews, is Very Positive with 86 percent of the 67 reviews left so far being positive ones. If this seems like a low amount of reviews it should be noted that, at the time of writing, it hasn’t even been eight hours since the game was made available to the public.

We expect more reviews will roll in as the Steam Next Fest and all its free demos comes to an end later today, and more people want to get in on the 20 percent discount before it goes.
