Sea of Thieves tops Steam charts during Summer Sale

Last week the Steam Summer Sale 2021 went live with the theme of “Forge Your Fate” and a choose your own adventure story. Most games on the platform also got discounts but according to what actually sold, Sea of Thieves came out on top.

This is according to Steam Database (SteamDB) which keeps a close eye on what’s happening on Valve’s storefront. According to it these are the top selling games on Steam for the week ending 27th June, according to revenue.

Forza Horizon 4 is included twice here as different versions of a game appear as separate titles on Steam. Forza Horizon 4 has three different editions containing various amounts of DLC, which is why it got 4th and 9th place here.

While Steam Database’s roundup doesn’t include the sale discount, we’ve thrown it in there for the sake of comparison.

1. Sea of Thieves | 33 percent off
2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – GOTY Edition | 50 percent off
3. Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition | 40 percent off
4. Forza Horizon 4 | 50 percent off
5. Halo: The Master Chief Collection | 50 percent off
6. Valve Index VR Kit | no discount
7. PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS | 50 percent off
8. Rust | 50 percent off
9. Forza Horizon 4 | 50 percent off
10. It Takes Two | 25 percent off

Discounts likely didn’t play that much of a role in the buying here as none of them went over 50 percent. Our theory as to why Sea of Thieves had such a good showing last week was due to the Pirates of the Caribbean crossover A Pirate’s Life. This launched on 22nd June just two days before the Steam Summer Sale went live.

The new crossover combined with the discount is likely why Rare’s pirate game did so well, on top of the intrinsic value of the game itself.

As for the rest of the list nothing is too surprising as it’s a collection of popular games that have decent discounts in the sale. The VR kit taking sixth place is a bit of an oddity as it has no discount and there’s a GPU shortage right now making VR games even more difficult to run.

That being said, with competitor Oculus continually taking anti-consumer steps under the leadership of Facebook, maybe it’s not too surprising.
