Telkom says it has lost 7841 batteries because of theft and vandalism

As South Africans contend with a week’s worth of loadshedding, electricity supply isn’t the only thing affected.

While one hopes that network connectivity remains unaffected thanks to battery backups, vandalism and theft continue to plague telecommunication firms such as Telkom.

The firm has revealed today that in the past year it has lost 7 841 batteries due to theft and vandalism.

“As illustration of the impact of the problem, Telkom could have built about 35 new base stations with the money lost from battery theft. This vandalism destroys back-up power that should keep communications active when lights go off and as a result; your productivity, connectivity and connection to those you need to be in touch with is affected,” the telco said.

When the power is on a lack of batteries may not be a big deal but as the power gets turned off connectivity is lost and worse still, folks in a emergency situation can’t get through to the services they need.

While Telkom works to fight vandalism and theft, it has called on the public for assistance.

There are as many as six ways you can report vandalism and theft at Telkom base stations to the firm:

• Call the Telkom Hotline on 0800 124 000
• Visit the Be Honest website
• Add Telkom on WhatsApp at 081 222 5999
• Email the telco at Telkomhotline@behonest.co.za
• SMS 48691
• Send a letter to address: BNT165, Brooklyn Square, 0075

You can also report instances of vandalism and theft to your local police station.
