60 minute limit on Google Meet for Free users being enforced again

During the pandemic videoconferencing platforms have become the go-to solutions for those working, studying or simply living remotely. The likes of Zoom and Microsoft Teams have become increasingly popular and, in order to keep pace, as well as offer its Free users a little something extra, Google Meet said it would not enforce the 60 minute limit on calls of three people or more.

That has changed this month, however, with the enforcement period coming back into effect at the end of June.

While the enforcement has not been significant to date, it looks like Google Meet will start doing so with increasing regularity, according to reports by 9to5Google.

The change does not impact one-on-one calls, with up to 24 hours of video call time still available regardless if you’re a Free or Enterprise account holder.

Previously, Google had decided to delay the enforcement date, with it originally set to end come on 30th September last year, before being extended to the end of March 2021. It was once again extended to the end of June 2021, but given that much of the world still has to deal with the pandemic, hopefully Google decides to bring the lack of call limit back.

Given that the United States, which is the largest market for the videoconferencing platform, is returning to some level of normalcy thanks to vaccination efforts, it may simply be that Google is applying what’s happening in the US to the rest of the world.

If that is indeed the case, it would be a pity, especially as videoconferencing platforms have become a vital part of work at the moment.

That said, if a video call for work is taking longer than 60 minutes, that meeting could be dragging on a bit too long.
