The country is three days into a 14-day long alert level 4 lockdown, as government aims to curb the impact of the third wave of infections for COVID-19 in South Africa.
Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), it is not having the desired effect yet, as 19 506 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. Perhaps most concerning, however, is the 383 new fatalities that have also been reported, as the delta variant of the virus has many worried.
Whether the level 4 lockdown can indeed flatten the curve is unclear, but the latest figures show why it is more important than ever to remain vigilant and adhere to regulations.
The total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 1 973 972, with the recovery rate dropping to 88.6 percent as 1 748 042 recoveries have been reported. The death rate related to COVID-19 in South Africa has climbed to 60 647 as a result of the latest report.
As for the vaccine rollout, the numbers accurate as of 17:00 on 30th June say 3 026 636 vaccines have bee administered to date, but the vast majority of these are the first dose of Pfizer vaccine.
