Huawei unveils P50 and P50 Pro as China-exclusive flagship phones… for now

At the beginning of June Huawei showcased HarmonyOS and its plans to developed the operating system into a potential rival for Android and iOS. At the time, one of the first new devices to sport the OS was confirmed in the form of the P50 series, but with seemingly very little fanfare or build up, the Chinese firm has unveiled the P50 and P50 Pro.

What makes the announcement so peculiar, is that the event seemed to focus solely on the Chinese market, with only the Chinese Huawei Consumer page populated with information about both flagship phones. Added to this is the fact that details on the devices barely feature on the Huawei Mobile Twitter or YouTube accounts, which again points to these devices being earmarked for China at the moment.

As such it remains to be seen whether South Africa, which is a first tier nation for Huawei, will receive the devices.

Despite having little to go on at the moment, we can at least piece together statistics and figures to see just what these new flagship phones have to offer.

We have already noted that HarmonyOS is running on both, which essentially means that the P50 series is pure Huawei, inside and out.

There are, however, a few elements that are not direct from Huawei, such as each device running Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processors. There is also a Kirin 9000 flavour, according to the spec sheet of the P50 Pro, while neither device make mention of supporting 5G, which does seem a tad odd.

Added to this is 8GB RAM setups on the P50 and P50 Pro, with the latter also receiving a 12GB RAM variant. Internal storage appears to vary between 128GB, 256GB and 512GB depending on the model.

Up front, the P50 features a 6.5″ OLED display, while the Pro model has a slightly larger 6.6″ OLED screen. There is also a difference in terms of battery capacity, with the P50 sporting 4 100mAh option and the Pro powered by a 4 360mAh version.

Lastly, the most eye catching element of the new series, the rear camera housing. Both models feature a 50MP primary sensor, with the regular P50 adding 12MP telephoto and 13MP ultra-wide lenses, whereas the P50 Pro has a 64MP telephoto, 40MP monochrome and 13MP ultra-wide lenses. These new phones are same when it comes to selfie cameras, however, with each having a 13MP front-facing lenses.

For now, the P50 series is set to launch in China only on 12th August, with the P50 costing 5 988 yuan (~R13 526) and the Pro retailing for 4 488 yuan (~R10 137).

If the Huawei P50 series is headed to SA, we’ll be sure to share the information with our readers.
