In Windows 11 the Blue Screen of Death is now Black

Since it was initially debuted last week, Windows 11 has garnered some mixed reactions. Much of this is based on previews of the new operating system, which is made available to those who are a part of the Windows Insider Program. One of the more peculiar changes to the OS pertains to the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

This screen which first appeared in Windows 8, is normally seen by system and IT administrators when trying to diagnose a fault with a device.

Now the Blue Screen of Death is changing colour and will be Black in Windows 11. The change was discovered by YouTuber Martin Nobel, who shared a video showcasing the new screen in action (also pasted below).

According to The Verge, this change is not simply a cosmetic one for the Insider Preview build, but rather one that Microsoft will look to make permanent once Windows 11 is officially launched into the wild. The change is also being done to match the black screens present on the logon and shutdown screens.

That’s really it for the changes to the Blue Screen of Death, however, as the same sad face is found, along with the usual message, “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some error info, and then you can restart.” The same goes for the scannable QR code that can be used to head over to a support page for assistance.

Given that the Blue Screen of Death was often not a quick fix, especially for regular consumers, the change to Black seems fitting.
