Kaseya has universal decryptor for those impacted by ransomware attack

Earlier this month remote management solutions provider (MSP) Kaseya suffered a ransomware attack that impacted its customers across the globe, with hacking group REvil taking credit for the attack and demanding a ransom in order to decrypt the compromised data.

Now, two weeks later, Kaseya has a universal decryption key of its own for customers to use if they were impacted by the aforementioned attack.

“On 7/21/2021, Kaseya obtained a decryptor for victims of the REvil ransomware attack, and we’re working to remediate customers impacted by the incident,” reads a new blog post from the company.

We can confirm that Kaseya obtained the tool from a third party and have teams actively helping customers affected by the ransomware to restore their environments, with no reports of any problem or issues associated with the decryptor. Kaseya is working with Emsisoft to support our customer engagement efforts, and Emsisoft has confirmed the key is effective at unlocking victims,” it adds.

Originally REvil had demanded $70 million in order to provide its own decryption key, but as Engadget reports, from mid-July the group seemingly went dark and have not been communicating their normal channels.

Whether the group has recently had some run-ins with the law or if it’s planning a larger attack, remains to be seen, but for right now, those organisations impacted by the attack have a recourse.

“We remain committed to ensuring the highest levels of safety for our customers and will continue to update here as more details become available,” says Kaseya.

“Customers who have been impacted by the ransomware will be contacted by Kaseya representatives,” it concludes.
