Marvel’s What If…? streams Wednesdays from 11th August

After Loki wraps up its final episode next week the next release from Marvel Studios will be the animated “What If…?” series that finally has an official release date of 11th August.

Like Loki the show will pop up on Wednesdays to bring us alternate reality takes on various key points of the MCU.

We’ve seen snippets of the What If…? series for a few months now but there is some new elements in this trailer starting with Erik Killmonger saving Tony Stark from the explosion that put shrapnel in his chest and started him on the road to becoming Iron Man.

This has a lot of implications as it essentially means that Tony Stark remains a destruction weapons manufacturer and never meets Ho Yinsen. Maybe, backed with Stark Industries tech, Killmonger has an easier time taking over Wakanda.

Other interesting snippets we see here include Howard the Duck popping up, zombie Iron Man, a beheaded but somehow still alive Scott Lang and Captain Carter – Peggy Carter as Captain America – using a sword to compliment the vibranium shield.

What’s odd about this trailer is the voice acting. That’s not Robert Downey, Jr providing the voice for Tony Stark and you can tell. That being said it is the late Chadwick Boseman providing the voice for T’Challa as Star-Lord, but it really doesn’t sound like him.

Unfortunately, and we have to bring this up every time we talk about Marvel shows, Disney+ is still not available in South Africa and we doubt that will change before 11th August.

South Africans have already missed WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Loki. The lack of access to the streaming service, combined with new lockdown rules, also means that the Black Widow movie will arrive more than a month late too.

It seems Disney has just left the country completely in the dust as local fans have no legal way to enjoy new Marvel Studios content.

Lastly it’s worth mentioning that a new poster has been released for the show that does reveal some new things.

The most interesting part is doubtless Spider-Man as the Sorcerer Supreme. There’s also a new version of Ultron wielding a lance that looks to have all the Infinity Stones in its chest, and zombie Hawkeye next to a zombie Steve Rogers Captain America.
