Questions, and answers, about the Nintendo Switch (OLED model)

Yesterday, after years of speculation and rumours, Nintendo announced a new version of the Switch unceremoniously called the “OLED model”.

Details about the console are still a bit thin as publications need to reach out to Nintendo to find out basic information such as the fact that the CPU and RAM will not be changed on this new version of the console.

These disappointments aside what Nintendo has provided to us is a basic Q&A which answers some ground level questions.

Most of these seem to be relate to interoperability between the new OLED model and previous versions of the Switch. Unsurprisingly, because all of the Switches are almost identical when it comes to hardware, there’s not many problems in sight.

It seems the only effort required on the user’s part to get old and new hardware talking is a possible system update.

All of this reminds of us of the Nintendo DS / 3DS era as those consoles were revised dozens of times aimed at selling the same playerbase new consoles instead of truly innovating.

Q: Can all Nintendo Switch titles be played on Nintendo Switch (OLED model)?

A: Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is compatible with the full library of Nintendo Switch games.

However, there may be differences in game experience with some of the Toy-Con accessories from the Nintendo Labo series, due to differences in console and screen size between Nintendo Switch (OLED model) and Nintendo Switch. There may also be games where the game experience may differ due to the new capabilities of the console, such as the larger screen size. For more information, please visit our support section.
