Rev your engine and listen for changes in Forza Horizon 5

Forza Horizon 5 is on track for release near the end of this year and developer Playground Games has given us a sneak peak at some new audio design in the upcoming title.

While in a garage or house in Forza Horizon 5 – or anywhere your cars can be modified – there’s now an option to rev your engine. This isn’t just to annoy your neighbours early on a weekend morning, but to hear the changes in your car’s sound after you fiddle with the engine.

Engine swaps and other upgrades are a staple of the series. In Forza Horizon 4, which we poured an ungodly amount of time into, we remember needing to apply changes and exit the garage to do some driving in order to hear any changes to the engine.

Aside from wasting time loading between two areas this was usually difficult to properly appreciate thanks to ambient sounds, so this new feature is much appreciated.

It may seem like a small change but really nailing vehicle sounds makes a proper impact to the driving experience. Just like guns in shooters how these machines sound goes a long way to properly recreating them in-game.

For some behind the scenes to the above Playground Games has also released a look at audio recording that go into those car sounds.

Real cars are used with an array of microphones set up both inside and outside of the vehicles.

What surprises us here is that some of the cars shown off in the video below have already appeared in past Forza games. We have to assume that the developer is re-recording audio for better fidelity or using new sounds for additional audio that didn’t exist before.

Forza Horzion 5 is planned for released on 9th November 2021 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. It will be available from release both on Xbox Games Pass and Steam.
