Secret Wars, Spider-Man Noir go from page to Future Revolution

Over the weekend Netmarble, the developer behind Marvel Future Revolution, kicked off a new series of behind the scenes videos called Dev Dispatch. The focus of the first episode is the process of turning comic costumes into in-game ones, starting with several heroes from the 2015 Secret Wars arc, as well as Spider-Man Noir.

Artists out there hoping to pick up some tips and tricks here will be left a bit disappointed as things are covered rather fast. The basic process outlined in the video is “sketch, 3D model, import into the game engine”.

The developers reveal a bit more in short interviews after with Netmarble working with Marvel to make sure everything is accurate.

Briefness aside this is a good look at the high character detail for this mobile game. Future Revolution has continually been billed as “Marvel’s first open world RPG on mobile” and it looks like it certainly has the detail to back that up.

There’s been a lot of smaller pieces of content released recently too with a look at Raid Mode, a statue of Magneto, a new Discord server and more. Nothing got us as excited as Secret Wars and Spider-Man Noir, but it’s nice to see.

The more we see of Future Revolution the more we compare it to the Square Enix console and PC Avengers game from late last year. While that game may have had this mobile title beat in terms of fidelity it played poorly and had enough microtransactions to make any mobile game blush. While it has been improved with updates since then, the game is fundamentally broken from a design point of view. You can see our launch review for more on that topic.

Marvel Future Revolution has released in certain markets but the rest of us need to pre-register on Android and iOS for a chance to play later this year.

Once we have our hands on the latest game from Netmarble it will be interesting to see if Square Enix’s attempt is embarrassed further by something on mobile.
