A few days ago Nintendo finally unveiled the latest version of the Switch, the dryly-named “OLED model”. South African pricing is still a mystery right now, but those who are considering buying it can put their names forward.

This is because Core, the official distributor for Nintendo in South Africa, has sent out an email to its subscribers asking for an expression of interest for anyone who wants to buy this new console.

Clicking on the link in this newsletter will prompt your email client to create a new draft with the following details:

“To: distributorsa[AT]nintendo[DOT]co[DOT]za

Subject line: Nintendo Switch OLED model

Body: I would like to be added to the email newsletter list to receive more information on the upcoming Nintendo Switch OLED model.”

The default wording for this email is a bit odd as only those who are already part of the mailing list would have received the email in the first place.

For anyone who thinks this has something to do with the new POPIA laws and the endless emails about mailing lists, that isn’t the case.

Back in January Core did the exact same thing and asked potential customers to express interest in the Mario Red & Blue Edition Nintendo Switch. That promotion worked exactly the same way as this with a new email draft popping up.

While local pricing for the OLED model is unknown right now the release date is not. South Africans will be able to get their hands on this new version of the console come 8th October 2021. This is the same day that it will launch overseas so there’s no delay for it right now.

We can take a shot at the dark when it comes to pricing, however. We’re still estimating that the OLED model will be very close to R10 000 in South Africa. This is based off of the fact that the regular Nintendo Switch has a crazy high price of R7 999 locally, an RRP which is almost double that compared to the US.
