Telkom stores countrywide shuttered in wake of looting and violence

Violence and looting has spread rapidly throughout South Africa leading to many retailers closing their doors in fear.

On Monday, Vodacom, Cell C and MTN were forced to close their stores in KwaZulu-Natal as violence in the province continued to escalate.

“The bulk of our stores in KZN were not open today, due to the ongoing risk of violence both related to the stores and public transport systems that have also been targeted,” executive for corporate affairs at MTN, Jacqui O’Sullivan told MyBroadband.

Today, Telkom has announced that due to the risk of violence and looting throughout the country, it too will be shuttering its stores for the foreseeable future.

“Please note that from 13 July 2021 all Telkom stores across the country will be closed until the situation can be assessed fully and it can be established that it is completely safe to resume business activities,” the network operator said in a statement on Tuesday.

Telkom has pointed customers to its digital self-service channels should customers need to address issues. This includes the self-service portal on the Telkom website as well as Telkom’s WhatsApp hotline which can be accessed by adding 081 160 1700 as a contact.

“Telkom understands that customers will be relying on their connectivity during this time more ever and we have therefore put a range of plans in place to ensure network availability and stability,” the network operator added.

“The company remains steadfast in ensuring that its connectivity services remain up throughout and as such all essential and necessary services will be running, managed and improved as needed,” said Telkom.
