The LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship returns as a R6300 set

Yesterday LEGO teased the reveal of a new set based on the Republic Gunship from Star Wars, and today we finally have all the details including the South African price.

75309: Republic Gunship is part of the Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS) subtheme that has brought us goliaths such as the Millennium Falcon and Star Destroyer in the past.

This new set contains 3 292 pieces and, overseas, costs $349.99 USD, £329.99 or €349.99 depending on the country.

Usually we’d take the UK price – which when converted is around R6 631 at the time of writing – and use that to estimate the cost in South Africa. Thankfully that isn’t required today as the LEGO Certified Stores has revealed a local price of R6 299.99.

That pricing is decent as the UK price is a closest comparison given similar markets and the fact that tax is included, unlike the pricing in America.

So the price, while still insanely high, is at least favourable, but what does that money buy?

The 3 292 pieces here combine to make a Republic Gunship that is 33 X 74 X 68 centimetres (height X width X length). This size can truly be appreciated when you look at a promotional image of the set being held up by a person. The large wingspan here is kind of undercut by the large empty space in the middle of the model where the crew and cargo goes.

This isn’t a knock against the design as that’s how the gunship looks in-universe, but it’s worth remembering when you look at the piece count and the size of the finished model.

As for minifigures buyers are getting a measly two with only Mace Windu and a Clone Trooper Commander included. At this price, even the slightly favourable South African localised price, there really should have been one or two more included here.

The two minifigures can be displayed on a small plaque that has the details about the fictional vehicle such as its manufacturer and length (17.4 metres).

75309: Republic Gunship launches on 1st August. Along with the local price the LEGO Certified Stores also confirmed that South Africa would be getting the set on the same day. That being said the ongoing riots may put a dent in those plans so we’d just put it in the diary in pencil for now.
