Three things Bungie should announce alongside Destiny 2: The Witch Queen next month

The Destiny community really is something special to behold. Despite constant communication with the developer on social media and its weekly This Week at Bungie blog, players go mad about any news coming out of Seattle.

Case in point is the latest “announcement” from Bungie. That announcement is a teaser for an announcement happening next month.

On 24th August Bungie will showcase the next major expansion for Destiny 2, The Witch Queen. Precious little is known about the expansion at this stage other than it will feature Savathûn as the big bad.

The date the announcement takes place – 24th August – also just so happens to be the day that the next Season of the game kicks off so it’s possible we will only know what will happen in that season on the 24th.

This is similar to what happened in 2020 with the announcement of Season of Arrivals and Beyond Light coinciding.

There are three things we are hoping Bungie announces over and above the new expansion. Let’s start with the worst idea since double primary weapons – Sunsetting.

Bringing old Raids out of the Vault

When Beyond Light launched in November 2020, it brought a new destination and some new weapons but a lot content was removed from the game. The reasoning behind this removal of content was simple – Destiny 2 is too big.

Unfortunately, in pursuit of removing content, Bungie was forced to remove a number of Raids, namely:

  • Leviathan
  • Eater of Worlds
  • Spire of Stars
  • Crown of Sorrow
  • Scourge of the Past

The reason we mention this is because there are rumours that The Witch Queen will introduce a new location and that means an existing location may be on the chopping block.

Our theory is that this location is The Dreaming City, given its loose ties to the events unfolding in Season of the Splicer. This has us thinking that maybe The Last Wish Raid is heading to the Destiny Content Vault as well.

This would leave three Raids in the game with a potential fourth accompanying the next expansion.

Are we greedy wanting 10 Raids playable at any time in Destiny 2? Perhaps but at the very least the Raids aboard the Leviathan should return. We’d argue that the Raids that take place in the Leviathan are perfect for new players as they aren’t too complex and can set players on a path to completing more of what is arguably Destiny’s best content.

We’re not too bothered about locations being taken out of the Vault, but an announcement that a few older Raids will be returning would be fantastic news.

Light sub-class reworks

Since the launch of Stasis as a sub-class there has been talk of Light sub-classes getting a similar treatment.

The Stasis sub-class offers players a greater degree of customisability through Aspects and Fragments. With these two features you can amp up how long a slow lasts or change the formation of Stasis Crystals.

In contrast, Light sub-classes feel very old hat and a battle with an evil being such as Savathûn could provide the perfect excuse for amping up the power of our ailing Light sub-classes.

This could also give the Vanguard more of purpose than being voices during Seasonal story beats. Much like Elsie acts as the vendor for Stasis Aspects and Fragments, Zavala and Ikora could do the same for Light sub-classes.

Of course this would mean Hunters getting an official replacement for Cayde-6, though there appears to be somebody waiting in the wings.

The PvP shaped hole

There are so many issues with the Player versus Player portion of Destiny 2 we don’t know where to begin.

Let’s start with maps.

There have been no new PvP maps introduced into Destiny 2 since 11 were pushed into the Destiny Content Vault. The Witch Queen has to do something with PvP and new maps would be a start.

Note that we say new. Nobody wants to go back to Vostok, or Emperor’s Respite, or Firebase Echo. While we’d be okay with maps such as The Citadel and Gambler’s Ruin returning, those maps would need to be reworked to be enjoyable and competitive.

We also need new modes that aren’t rotated weekly. Elimination, Control, Rumble and Survival  are fine but they get boring rather quickly and if you aren’t participating in Trials of Osiris, your PvP experience for the week is limited to these permanent modes.

We need new modes that give players more reasons to dive into PvP aside from completing quests and to earn meta-weapons. Aside from filling out the population a bit more, it would just be fun to have fun in PvP and make some new friends along the way.

Balancing is a bit of a tricky one because Bungie is working to make the game feel a bit more fair by controlling outliers in terms of weapons and abilities. This is a good start but we need more Bungie.

Bonus: In-game LFG

Given it has been nearly five years since the launch of Destiny 2, it’s time for Bungie to implement a “looking for group” (LFG) feature into Destiny.

There are myriad LFG services online that help players find a Fireteam for Raids, Dungeons and other activities but none of these services are easily accessible from within Destiny 2.

The worst part of this is that Bungie has such a service on its website so the functionality is there, it just needs to be incorporated into the game.

Of course, this is easier said than done but come on, it has been five years and the best Bungie can do is recommend using a third-party website?

The Guided Games experiment has been a failure and it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

Sadly, we don’t think this feature will come alongside a Witch Queen announcement, but we live in hope.
