Twitter adds ability to change who can reply to your tweets

Twitter has added a new feature for those who want to control who can reply to their tweets, even after they have been posted.

The new feature was unveiled a few hours ago and expands on a similar option that Twitter debuted back in August of last year. The key difference with this iteration is being able to choose between three options – Everyone, People You Follow or Only People You Mentioned.

Whether this will make the replies section of Twitter a little cleaner remains to be seen, as is the reaction by those that espouse free speech that this type of setting may limit the ability to interact with conversations online.

Based on the replies to the tweet on the Twitter Support account, it looks like people are more preoccupied with getting their own accounts reactivated or unsuspended.

If you are one of the people interested in testing out this feature, simply hit the ellipsis button on a particular tweet. At the bottom of the lists of features should appear the Change Who Can Reply option. Once you click on that, the three aforementioned reply groups will be listed, with Everyone Can Reply being the default one selected.

Given the current chaos in South Africa at the moment, not to mention government keeping an eye on social media to see who is inciting violence, it may be best to put this new feature to work in order to limit any misinformation from being attached to any well intentioned tweets.
