Ubisoft shows off new free-to-play shooter Tom Clancy’s XDefiant

You know what the world needs more of? Team-based shooters. We don’t have hold this opinion but it seems the team at Ubisoft San Francisco does.

The team at Ubisoft San Francisco has been working on a free-to-play team based shooter called Tom Clancy’s XDefiant that features characters from past Tom Clancy games.

These aren’t main characters mind you, at least not yet, with players taking control of a member from one of four factions. These factions are Wolves (Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon), Outcasts (The Division), Cleaners (The Division) and Echelon (Splinter Cell).

Despite having pre-made character to choose from, players will be able to personalise their Defiant (as Ubisoft calls them) through weapon selection and loadouts. Players will fight against each other in teams of six in maps that hark back to Tom Clancy games.

Defiant’s also have Ultra abilities that can swing the tide of battle but the focus here appears to be on gun fighting.

The game will be free to play and we suspect that Ubisoft will sell a Battle Pass or something to that effect in order to make money and keep players coming back.

The game doesn’t have a release date yet but a closed test will be taking place on 5th August. Unfortunately, you need to be in the US or Canada and playing on PC to participate in the test. Ubisoft says that additional tests will be announced later in the year.

At release though, Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X.

Of course, if you want to play a Tom Clancy game that features characters from across Ubisoft’s properties then you can always try out Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad for mobile.
