Crystal Dynamics shows off Black Panther ahead of War for Wakanda

Later this month, on 17th August, Marvel’s Avengers will receive its biggest expansion to date in the form of War for Wakanda. The man in the middle of it is, of course, Black Panther, and like the other heroes in the game he will have a slew of outfits to choose from.

Developer Crystal Dynamics has now revealed several of these outfits ahead of time while also revealing what inspired them.

Crystal Dynamics originals

(Left) the Iconic outfit and (right) the “King T’Challa” outfit

Two of the five outfits are what Crystal Dynamics calls “originals”. This isn’t to say that these wholly new designs (both are obviously inspired by Black Panther content fromt he past) but instead they aren’t based on any one look of the character.

The Iconic outfit is the hero (heh) look for Black Panther and what you will start with in War for Wakanda.

“…we combined the classic Black Panther visuals and silhouette with the more modern and functional aspects of his look that many fans have grown accustomed to over the decades,” Crystal Dynamics writes.

This outfit looks good but we’re not 100 percent sold on those diamonds running across the forehead.

The King T’Challa outfit is what the hero would be wearing when out of battle, but he still has claw “finger rings” for battle.

Inspired outfits

From left to right: Most Dangerous Man, Strategist and Damisa-Sarki.

The remaining three outfits all are based on specific looks of Black Panther from the past.

The Most Dangerous Man outfit is, according to Crystal Dynamics, “inspired by the comics” with several elements pulled from past issues to make a noir look complete with a kind of trench coat. This one would also work for the vampire slayer Blade if you removed the mask.

The Strategist outfit is specifically modelled after Black Panther: Man Without Fear #513 in which T’Challa plays substitute for Daredevil. This one certainly looks the most realistic as some kind of black ops stealth suit.

Finally there’s the Damisa-Sarki outfit inspired by the original appearance of Black Panther as drawn by Jack Kirby first in 1966.

“Meaning ‘The Panther’ in Wakandan, the Damisa-Sarki Outfit shows Black Panther in a short cape, which we saw was a much-requested outfit on social channels. Black Panther has worn a cape many times in the comics, so we wanted to pay homage to that,” the description reads.

Yes yes, no capes and all that, but this one also looks great in our opinion.

Marvel’s Avengers didn’t impress us at launch and it has struggled to bring in new players since then. Hopefully the War for Wakanda expansion and all the Black Panther content will lure people in.
