South African price of the Nintendo Switch has been reduced to R6999

Today many people across South Africa may have seen that the Nintendo Switch went on sale from several retailers at R6 999, a full thousand Rand off of the usual RRP for the console in the country of R7 999.

We can now report, thanks to official comment from the Nintendo distributor in South Africa, Core, that this isn’t a limited-time sale, but a permanent reduction to the price.

Back in June 2020 we wrote about the fact that the price of the Nintendo Switch had a substantial increase pushing it to R7 999. The reason Core provided to us at the time was “devaluation of the Rand” where, at one point, the US Dollar was close to R20.

Right now things have improved significantly with a US Dollar now at R14.42 at the time of writing.

While we do appreciate a cheaper console South Africans are still paying dearly for this hardware. The US RRP of the Nintendo Switch remains at $299.99, which is around R4 327 right now.

As always, when talking about American pricing, it’s worth considering that tax is not included. Even if we apply South Africa’s 15 percent VAT to the situation, that’s still only R4 976.05. Even if we round things up to an even R5 000 – that’s still a R1 999 price difference when compared to the new reduced price of the Nintendo Switch.

What about the Lite and OLED model?

Unfortunately, at least right now, the Nintendo Switch Lite has not received a similar price change.

The Switch Lite also had its price increased from R3 999 to R4 999 last year. This R4 999 is still the RRP of the console today.

Lastly worth mentioning is the upcoming Nintendo Switch (OLED model). Slated for release overseas and in South Africa on 8th October, the pricing of this latest version of the console is still a mystery.

In America the OLED model will cost $50 more, bringing its price to $349.99. A straight conversion brings that price to R5 048, and including the 15 percent VAT as a thought experiment is R5 805.

The OLED model will obviously cost much more than that when it comes to this country, as even our increased estimation places the price lower than the standard Nintendo Switch.
