Apple looking to rollout digital vaccination cards in iOS 15

The idea of digital vaccination cards is becoming an increasingly popular one with Apple now joining the likes of Google and Samsung in making the option to design and store them in mobile apps available to developers.

In a post on its developer portal, Apple explained that said digital vaccination cards would be stored in the Wallet app and rolled out to devices running iOS 15, with more nations looking at the use of vaccination verification in order to gain access to public places and businesses.

While no precise date, or indeed region availability, has been noted at this stage, the feature could be adopted by recognised healthcare organisations that are looking to make verifiable records available via Apple’s SMART Health Cards.

“With iOS 15, users can download and store verifiable health records, including COVID-19 vaccinations and test results, in the Health app. Verifiable health records in the Health app are based on the SMART Health Cards specification. Users can choose to share verifiable health records stored in the Health app with approved third-party apps requesting this information, like airlines, event venues, and other businesses that facilitate in-person interactions,” the company’s developer post explained.

“And in an upcoming software update, they can also choose to add verifiable COVID-19 vaccination records as a vaccination card in Apple Wallet to present to businesses, venues, and more,” Apple added.

Given the slow pace with which Apple’s digital services take to reach South Africa, it remains to be seen whether such a solution will be rolled out locally, but it looks like more technology companies are aiming to empower the use of digital vaccination cards.
