COVID-19 in South Africa: 16th September 2021

Another day under lockdown sees the numbers regarding COVID-19 in South Africa remain the same as they have been for the past week. To that end, the number of newly recorded cases and fatalities appear to be lingering around the same level.

According to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), the past 24 hours has seen 4 667 cases recorded and while that is far lower than what we saw during the peak of the third wave, it looks like we cannot shake the spread of the delta variant of the virus.

As such, the total number of infections recorded in SA to date has now reached 2 869 201, with the NDoH noting that over 17.19 million tests have been conducted so far. The department also points out that the recovery rate has increased slightly to 94.1 percent.

The other key figure sees 166 fatalities being reported as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rises to 85 468.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 241 867 jabs administered as turnout at sites across the country remain high, which is one of the only positives we have seen this month.

As of 17:00 on 15th September, 15 447 034 vaccines have been administered in total, with an estimated 7 609 183 people inoculated at this stage.
