COVID-19 in South Africa: 22nd September 2021

As we reach the midway point in the week, the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) on COVID-19 in South Africa shows that the statistics around the spread of the virus remain relatively low.

This as 2 197 cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, which is far less than we have seen in recent weeks. While that may give reason for optimism, with a predicted fourth wave in November and the desire to move to a lower level of lockdown, the numbers still have to drop considerably.

The NDoH also confirms that the total number of infections recorded to date has climbed to 2 886 331. Added to this, the report notes that 160 fatalities have been recorded as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rises to 86 376.

As for the other key statistics, the recovery rate has increased slightly again to 95.1 percent with 2 743 865 recoveries recorded and over 17.41 million tests done to date.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, turnout does not appear to be as good as it was in previous weeks, with 178 685 vaccines administered in the past 24 hours. As of 17:00 on 21st September, a total of 16 358 076 jabs have been administered, with an estimated 8 108 520 people inoculated at this stage.
