Yesterday, the number of newly recorded cases for COVID-19 in South Africa were lower than we have seen in recent weeks.
The latest figures from the National Department of Health (NDoH), show the number of new infections more than doubling, which shows that we are still dealing with the impact of the third wave.
To that end 1 367 cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours, as the total number of infections to date for SA climbs to 2 898 888.
While we are yet to see numbers drop below the 1k mark for a sustained period of time, another area of concern is fatalities, with 201 reported in the past 24 hours, again pointing to the impact of the third wave and delta variant of the virus.
As such, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has since reached 87 417.
The other key statistics in the report show that the recovery rate has remained the same at 95.4 percent, with 2 765 700 recoveries and over 17.60 million tests conducted to date.
Shifting to the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 164 097 jabs administered, which is continues the lower turnout at sites we have seen in recent days.
Hopefully this changes after the coming weekend, with the second vaccine dose eligibility available to those aged 18 and over, after cabinet’s announcement a little over six weeks ago.
As of 17:00 on 28th September, a total of 17 176 603 vaccines have been administered, with an estimated 8 611 747 people inoculated at this stage.
