Inspiration4 mission to orbit launches next week

Next week on 15th September four civilians who have no previous astronaut training will launch into orbit and spend three days circling the globe.

The mission has been dubbed Inspiration4 and the goal appears to be raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital while also giving ordinary citizens the chance to experience Earth the way astronauts and billionaires do.

The four person crew will live aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon for the three days after liftoff from the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The crew is made up of:

  • Jared Isaacman – Founder and chief executive officer at Shift4 Payments. Will serve as mission commander.
  • Hayley Arceneaux – physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Will serve as chief medical officer.
  • Chris Sembroski – a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital supporter. Will serve as mission specialist
  • Dr Sian Proctor – Entrepreneur who makes use of Shift4Shop. Will serve as the mission pilot.

If you’ve noticed a bit of trend with these four that’s because Shift4Shop and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital are partners in this mission. You can read more about the crew here.

The exact time of launch is yet to be announced but pre-flight checks and training are complete so we should see a launch next week.

While orbiting our blue-green marble the crew will conduct experiments using equipment specifically designed for micro-gravity research. There will of course be supplies for the crew and there will reportedly be as much as 165kgs of cargo aboard the Crew Dragon.

After the three day mission is complete, the crew will splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean.

There is also a Netflix docu-series being rolled out ahead of the launch next week.

The first two episodes on the docu-series are available to stream right now and it’s a rather fantastic watch.

We’re holding thumbs that the mission goes off without a hitch and the four crew members – who have been training for months – return to Earth safely.
